Pay attention to the training mechanism for female surgeons

Female surgical directors from different surgical sub-specialties categorize occupation-related factors into two categories: internal and external factors. The explicit external factors include gender discrimination and stereotypes, and the hidden factors include unconscious biases that are common in culture. The internal factors are personality traits, including self-confidence, determination, persistence, resilience and selflessness.

When discussing the external factors affecting career development, most interviewees agreed that encouragement from home and school can help foster their self-confidence. The guidance from seniors and mentors in this major is also very important.

Taken together, gender bias in the surgical field may be more unconscious, originate from the culture itself, or belong to stereotypes. But they are obstacles to the career path of female surgeons. The related findings may have a positive impact on the training mechanism, team composition and training of female surgeons.

In fact, in the surgical system, women take on a lot of work. The achievements of many people are not inferior to those of male doctors of the time.

The "Survey Report on the Practice of Chinese Female Surgeons (2019)" shows that most female surgeons believe that they have some disadvantages compared with men in surgery, such as physical strength, physiology, family, etc., there are certain differences. However, in terms of advantages, most of them believe that they are more careful, considerate, operate softer and more flexible, have less injury and are more patient with patients.

As a female surgeon, Lu Qian, executive director of the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery at Beijing Tsinghua Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, is often asked whether women are suitable for surgery. Her answer is: Don't set limits for yourself, and others don't set limits for female doctors.

Lu Qian told the "medical community" that with the emergence of new technologies and new machines, surgery is gradually getting rid of "strengthening". In the future, female surgeons will gradually increase.
